Staying at the Chinese University of Hong Kong

June 19, 2005
Currently I am staying in a dorm at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The university is located way up in the New Territories and hour away from downtown Hong Kong. The good news is that we have a nice view and don't have to deal with shouldering our way through throngs of people 24/7. The bad news is that we have come to believe that CUHK has a goal of making sure that its students never have fun off of campus (or on campus for that matter). The last bus from the train station to our dorm (a thirty minute, up hill walk) leaves at 11:25pm. The campus is actually right next to the train station - you just get off the train and go through a tunnel to get to the campus. But there is only one entrance to the campus by car, and so when we try to take a cab from the station to our dorm it we actually end up on the highway and have a 25 minute drive - all this for a 50 foot walk by foot. The first time this happened to us we were sure that we were being taken advantage of as dumb foreigners. But it turns out that it's really the only way to get back. Apparently there was once a bar on campus but it closed down due to lack of student interest. One student told us that there are pretty much never parties on campus. A lot of the foreign exchange students go into the city to party, and then end up getting kicked out for bad grades. Life right now life on campus is pretty dead, although that's also because it's summer and there are fewer students around. Of course the laid back summer atmosphere also means that they're not enforcing the no members of the opposite sex in the dorms policy. Hong Kong is still a long ways away from having coed bathrooms. Map of Hong Kong The Hong Kong Semi-Autonomous Region comprises the New Territories, Kowloon, Lautau Island, and Hong Kong Island. The central business district is on Hong Kong island. We're staying in the New Territories, which is far away. The view from the university will be spectacular when the sun comes out, which has yet to happen in the five days I've been here so far. Here's my room. It's pretty spacious. I have three beds all to myself. During the school year it would hold three people, which must be hell.
